Students Prepare For 2008 Election - College Republicans, Young Democrats Unite

By Amanda K. Ryan '10
STAFF WRITER

The first Tuesday in November draws citizens of the United States to nearby schools and polling areas to vote for candidates to represent them either locally and nationally. Every four years, candidates for the President of the United States are listed on the ballot. This year, the incumbent president, George W. Bush, cannot be re-elected.

According to CNN.com, only 121,480,019 people cast a vote in the 2004 presidential. Campus clubs are trying to raise those numbers within the college community by increasing awareness and education about the election and its impact on individuals.

Students on Sweet Briar’s campus are making an effort to register to vote. Bumper stickers supporting particular candidates are on cars, political T-shirts are seen worn more frequently, and awareness is certainly up. Facebook groups grow larger daily as students declare support for one candidate or another.

Lucy Hankinson ’09, president of Sweet Briar’s Young Democrats club, is working to inform the campus in conjunction with Jessica Gregg ’09, president of the College Republicans. Gregg says, “We just published a…stall story [informational handout posted in bathroom stalls] that talks about both the President and Vice-Presidential candidate's stance on fiscal issues.” Hankinson says that this approach is “helping to educate SBC students…so that they can make informed decisions.”

The two primary tickets are for John McCain/Sarah Palin and Barack Obama/Joe Biden. There are four others on the Virginia ticket for the election, including Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney, and Ralph Nader with their respective running mates Darrell Castle, Wayne Allyn Root, Rosa Clemente, and Matt Gonzalez.
