Artist: Keane
Release Date: 10/14/08

What this album is like: Driving down the highway at dusk with all the windows down and the radio turned up.

Pro-tip: There are two bonus tracks for this album: "My Shadow", which was only available if you pre-ordered the album through Japan and iTunes UK, and "Time to Go", from the pre-ordered album on iTunes. Through means most nefarious (okay, it was Youtube, I admit it), I got my hands on both of them, and they were most excellent songs indeed. Check them out if you get a chance.

Rating: 4/5 bagels

Well, I lied to you all. I said I would do something different, but I'm afraid I'm just not brave enough to step outside the box and review Metallica's Death Magnetic. So sue me for being a coward.

No, instead I took the mellow route, again. To be honest, the only song of English piano rock band Keane's I'd ever heard was the single they released a few years ago, "Somewhere Only We Know". And, unlike in their previous albums, the songs of Perfect Symmetry include the guitar. But just because they're using a guitar in their songs doesn't mean Keane has conformed to mainstream music. No, they're still the good old piano rock band they always were.

The addition of synthesizers keeps Keane just quirky enough to be enjoyable without being too 'out there'. And just because the tone is laid back, don't mistake Keane for some wishy-washy, namby-pamby love ballad band. No, there's real power behind these songs. They seriously make me want to dance.

"Spiralling", one of my favorite tracks, is a bit reminiscent of some of pop singer-songwriter Mika's songs, so if you're into him, you might want to check these guys out, too. If you want to get a taste, go listen to "Again and Again" or "Black Burning Heart" and prepare to be amazed.

The only thing that bothers me about Perfect Symmetry is that an awful lot of the songs are in the four-to-five minute range, and sometimes even longer. Call me picky, but I prefer my songs to be closer to three minutes. But really, that's my only gripe here.

I solemnly swear I will have something totally new and crazy and different for you all next time! Have an awesome Thanksgiving Break!
