Interview with Comedian David J. Nash

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Sunday April 1st marked comedian David Nash’s thirteenth performance at Sweet Briar. I had the opportunity to sit down and speak to David J. before the show Sunday night. We discussed his new sitcom ‘Til Death, which airs Wednesday nights at 9:30pm after American Idol on Fox and stars Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond).

Til Death was recently nominated for a People’s Choice Award for “Best New Show”. Readers might also be impressed that David J. has opened for comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Adam Sandler, and may also have seen him on The Late Late Show or on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend.

A Massachusetts native, David J. now lives in Los Angeles where he continues to perform stand-up comedy and works on ‘Til Death. He shared with me that his comedic influences were Bill Cosby and Steve Martin, although he has not met either one.

While in undergrad at Brown University as a double major in Economics and English, David J. began stand-up comedy shows at his and other college campuses, during which time he first performed at SBC. I asked him. if he had made any jokes due to his numerous visits to SBC, and he laughed and replied, “Oh Yea! Let’s talk about the town of Lynchburg. I’m Jewish so I don’t feel comfortable with “Lynch” and “Burg” in the same sentence, let alone the same word!”

David J. also mentioned that he has performed at 10% of the colleges that exist in the United States, and SBC is in his top ten best schools to perform at, if not the best. I do love Sweet Briar dearly, but I had to know what accounted for his admiration of our tiny all-women’s college.

When asked what he found unchanging about the audience at SBC that kept bringing him back each year, David J. simply stated that everyone is always so nice and appreciative. On a lighter note, he realized that every year people are dressed up in lovely outfits and have bows in their hair!

David J. has been interviewed by the Voice before, so I thought I’d switch it up a bit and ask him an unusual question—if he had any “love children.” I initially received a giant laugh and confused look, but after recovering, David J. surprisingly stated that “Yes, Britney Spears in my daughter. Britney, dear, if you are reading this, come home dearie, come home. We bought your hair on eBay, so don’t worry: we can just glue it right back on!”

Being the successful person he is, David J. gave some meaningful advice to incoming SBC students: “Check out Wal-Mart, there’s fun in every aisle. Get a Hampden-Sydney guy to take you there on a date sometime”. To graduating seniors, he supplied this valuable information: “Leave Wal-Mart behind, as well as the HSC boy. Oh yeah, and bring your friendliness into the real world, we need more of it!”

I was expecting a little bit of a different answer when I asked David J. if he were a girl, would he attend SBC and why. He responded, “I’ve actually applied every year for the past ten years and have been wait-listed every time. They said something about me needing an ‘operation’ and a horse? I don’t know…”

In an attempt to squeeze out any other non-typical information, David J. offered his thoughts on what types of jobs he might like to pursue after doing stand-up and “growing up”. He said he would like to sing jingles on TV, but is very much torn between being a Mall Cop, a birthday party clown, and a stay-at-home-mom.

Thirty minutes after I first met David J., I was out hundreds of tears from laughing so hard, so I finally concluded our interview. David J. performed his 13th show in front of a packed Josie Dining Room, and was once again, a great success. I would like to personally thank David J. for thinking so highly of SBC that he keeps finding time to come back and perform.

Sunday night marked my 5th time seeing David J. (I saw him when I came for my accepted applicants open house), and once again, I laughed the entire time. Be sure to catch his sitcom ‘Til Death Wednesday nights at 9:30pm, and save room on your calendar for next year’s David J. performance. You will be happy you did!
