Vixens Too Good for Angels

The cold was bitter on February 18, but it wasn’t enough to freeze the Vixen’s chances against Meredith College Softball in a double header.

While that Sunday was both cold and windy, the team managed to win both the games by a long shot with a high score of 16-6 and 16-4.

“The extreme weather made the games go a lot faster because no one wanted to be outside longer than we had to,” said senior Lynnsey Brown. “Gripping the ball and the bat wasn’t as big of a problem because most of us had two or three hand-warmers in our back pockets.”

It was an intense game during the fourth inning, when both teams were tied 4-4. During the bottom of the sixth inning, the Vixens added eight insurance runs to the score.

“I think our team displayed really strong teamwork and an especially strong offense,” said first-year Blair Mullally.

In the first game, one pivotal moment was when Mullally ‘10 hit a home run, followed by a grand slam by sophomore Krystal Ellis.

Pitching by first-years Becca Almond and Nikki Taylor also led the team to victory. Taylor picked up her second collegiate win, while Almond picked up her first.

In the second game, the Vixens scored 11 runs in the first two innings, including a 3-run homerun. Sophomores Krystal Ellis and Meagan Bell finished with 7 RBIs. Both Bell and Ellis hit over the fence homeruns that helped bring the team to victory.

Overall, many of the players thought they were well prepared for the game.

“Playing at our home field and in front of a home crowd always provides more inspiration than playing away,” said Natalie Cutchin ‘09.

“Our team is very strong this year and if we continue to work together, I definitely think it’s a possibility that we could make it to post-season play,” added Cutchin.
