Freshman Vixen Sets New Swim Record
By: Lauren Hogan '10
STAFF WRITER

On January 27, Hannah Hesser ’10 set a new Sweet Briar school record at Guilford College, during the last dual meet of the Vixen’s season. With a time of 9.54.92, Hesser beat out admissions counselor Autumn Fish’s old record in the 800 meter freestyle.

“It was exciting! It was the first record I’ve ever broken at Sweet Briar.” Hesser has been swimming since she was five years old and has set records before, but never as important as this one. It was also added to the team’s success; Hesser’s win increased the score and the Vixens defeated host Guilford College 71-27.

Coach Jason Gallaher also had reason to be excited. Assistant coach Kelly Espy explained that Hessner was the first swimmer to set a new meter record since he has been there. “The meet went well today,” Gallaher said. “I think the highlight would be Hannah breaking the school record. Overall I was very pleased with the way the girls swam.”

The Vixens finished their season 10-3 and will compete in their last meet of the season, which will be their conference at Radford during the weekend of February 16-17. Gallaher commented, “Over the next couple of weeks we will be preparing for the conference championship. We are definitely excited. It is possible for us to finish as high as third this year and that is a goal we have set out to accomplish as a team.”

Students Victoria Goddard, Brittany Carlton, Kelsey Jeffers, and Catie Gumpman also assisted the team by picking up first place points in the 200 yd medley. It was not enough however, to defeat District-2 Catawba College, who the Vixens also competed against that day.
