The Bum Bazaar: Better Late Than Never!
By Caroline Sapp '09
STAFF WRITER

On February the 8th, the doors to the annual Bum Bazaar will open to Sweet Briar and the rest of the community. The Bazaar will be open from 10am to 7pm in the Atrium and Josey Dinning Room of Prothro.

In the past, Bum Bazaars have been held in December, when people on campus are looking to buy holiday gifts and thus have reason to shop heavily. However, according to event organizer Whitney Towler, there was not enough interest from vendors, due to the proximity to the holiday season. So, instead of having the Bazaar in December with only a very few vendors, there will be up to fifteen vendors on Thursday Bazaar.

The vendors include Preppy Pink Pony, Narrow Gate Tack, and possibly even a glassblower. Many of the vendors also sell at the Garlic Festival. There will also be several club tables selling items to raise money for their own causes.

The Bazaar is part of the Bums’ commitment to the campus and community service. The Bazaar raises money for the Bum Scholarship, which is $1,000. The vendors agree to donate 10% of their profits to the scholarship fund in order to get a table at the Bazaar. The scholarship is awarded every time the Bums raise the amount. The President’s Office takes the money and then selects a sophomore deserving of the scholarship (so all sophomores who tremble and quake when they hear bells should consider that perhaps the ladies in red aren’t all that bad).

While the current season is not as consumer-driven as December, Valentines Day is coming up, so students may find this is a good opportunity to support a good cause and buy their friends or sweethearts a nice gift at the same time. Admission is one can of food that will be donated to the local homeless shelter.

The current list of vendors is:

Central Virginia Chiropractic Center will provide a massage chair
CLE Crafts - totes
Blue Ridge Glass Works
Narrow gate Tack
Treasure Chest
Ginger's Handmade jewelry
Preppy Pink Pony
Mary Kay Cosmetics
S'Amanda's
Class of 2007
Student Athletic Advisory Committee

…with others to be announced.
