Last spring, the Sweet Briar community bid a fond farewell not only to the talented class of 2006 but also to a number of our exceptional faculty. Some went on to retirement or other universities, others will be returning to us after year-long sabbaticals. Regardless, there are roles to be filled on our close-knit campus, a continuing challenge for the Dean’s Office.

Since the March farewell issue of the Voice, we have had additional vacancies among the faculty. Notably, the head of our government department, Professor Key, left Sweet Briar over the summer. The Dean’s Office has informed us that Professor Key will be replaced by Dr. Spencer Bakich of James Madison and UVA. “[Dr. Bakich] comes with some rich experiences related to international conflicts that should be quite relevant to contemporary issues,” Green reported in an online interview. “We are also welcoming a number of new faculty members . . .who will be full-time.” Our newest additions, including their roles and alma maters were announced at the 2006 Convocation Ceremony. For those who missed it, look for these new faces around campus and in the classroom. They are sure to contribute to the richness and diversity of thought present here at SBC.
