Robert F. Kennedy, Jr to speak on campus
By Alicia Gormon ’06
STAFF WRITER

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will visit Sweet Briar College on April 27th to explain how our legal system affects the fate of our natural environment, and that one person can make a difference in protecting it, in his speech, “The Power of Law.”

Kennedy, a defender of the environment, will address in his speech sanctions made by our federal and state governments that are detrimental to the environment. Also, he will touch on his personal battles and work in the legal field to protect the environment.

Kennedy’s goal is to incite awareness and promote change to preserve the environment through taking action against those who illegally pollute it.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy, who was the brother of President John F. Kennedy and served as Attorney General before being elected to the U.S. Senate from New York. He was assassinated in 1968, five years after his brother.

A graduate of Harvard University, Kennedy has studied at the London School of Economics, and he received his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School.

He then pursued his Masters Degree in Environmental Law at Pace University School of Law, where he now is the Clinical Professor and Supervising Attorney at Pace University’s School of Law’s Environmental Litigation Clinic.

He currently serves as Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Chief Prosecuting Attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper, and President of Waterkeeper Alliance.

The events at Sweet Briar will start with a discussion between Kennedy and a group of Environmental and Government students.

Kennedy will then have cocktails and dinner with the College’s Board of Directors and others.

At 8 pm in the Murchison Lane Auditorium at the Babcock Fine Arts Center, Kennedy will deliver his speech, “The Power of Law.”

Immediately following the speech, Kennedy will sign copies of his books on stage.

Kennedy has published several books, including Crimes Against Nature, a New York Times bestseller, The Riverkeepers, Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr.: A Biography, and a recently published children’s book, Saint Francis of Assisi: A Life of Joy.

The Sweet Briar Book Shop will feature and sell two of Kennedy’s books, Crimes Against Nature, and Saint Francis of Assisi: A Life of Joy.

The Book Shop will sell Kennedy’s books before and after the lecture, beginning at 7 pm in the Lobby area of the Babcock Fine Arts Center.

Tickets have all been distributed, but there is a waiting list being maintained in case any of the tickets are unused. To be added to the waiting list e-mail kennedyeventinfo@sbc.edu or call x6583.
