The Man Behind the Smile
By Michelle Sanchez ’08
STAFF WRITER

Carson WarrickCarson M. Warrick has been working at Sweet Briar College for about 38 years. On school days, Carson can be found in the mornings making “delicious omelets” and pancakes in Prothro. He is described by students like Ellie Donahue ’08 and Irene Maslanik ’07 as being “very friendly” and “cheerful all the time.” He has lived his whole life in Virginia and has lived by “Old Stage Road” since marriage. He is a father to two daughters, one son, and has two grandchildren. His youngest child, his son, is 21 years old and in college.

Aside from his love of cooking, Carson enjoys reading books by Rudyard Kipling. His hobbies include going to flea markets and hunting. Amy Hubbard ’06 mentions how she chats with Carson often. “He makes me banana pancakes and talks about hunting,” she said. For fun, he also enjoys going out for a drive. He usually drives his Dodge Sprint, but he just purchased a Honda. On Sunday afternoons, Carson can be found watching his favorite television show, “Gunsmoke.” When asked if he cooks at home for his wife, Carson said, “I do a lot of cooking at home. My wife thinks I'm a better cook than she is.” So what is this cook's favorite home dish? Fried Chicken.

Carson explained that his basic philosophy on life is “to treat everyone with respect regardless of how they treat you.” When asked about working at Sweet Briar, he said, “For the last five to six years, the girls have been especially nice, agreeable, and friendly. It makes my job a rewarding experience.”

Several of the Sweet Briar College students such as Mary Dance ’08 stated, “He makes my mornings!” Leslie Heffron ’08 also expressed her fondness of Carson. “I love Carson!,” she said. “He makes me chocolate chip pancakes every morning. I miss him on the weekends.” According to Rebekah McSpadden ’07, “He notices when you don't show up. That's really saying a lot.”

“A lot of the girls that go here are from out of state,” Carson said, “and I try to treat them similar to how a father would treat them back home.”
