Alpha Lambda Delta inducts new members

On Oct. 15 in the Conference Center, 25 new members were inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta society. Founded in 1924 by Maria Leonard, the Dean of Women at the University of Illinois, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honors society that recognizes college students that receive at least a 3.5 GPA or better during their first year of college.

Professor John Goulde, the moderator of the society, started the ceremony by discussing Alpha Lambda Delta and how students can benefit from their experiences in it. All members, for example, are eligible to receive a scholarship upon graduation. Following Dr. Goulde, Dean Green spoke and congratulated everyone on becoming a member of the society and discussed the past successes of its members.

Kendra Hawkins ’07, the current president of Alpha Lambda Delta, then called every new member up one by one to sign the book, a record of all past Sweet Briar members. Next, everyone received a pin from Jennifer Dick ’07, another current member, and a certificate from Professor Goulde. After everyone received their pin and certificate, they took a pledge to continue with their academic successes and lit their candles as a symbol of passing the torch of knowledge on to one another.

“The ceremony was really nice,” Julie Midgley ’08 said. “I was honored to be inducted into the society.”
