The Student Relations Committee: Bringing Alumnae and Students Together
By Kate Dobie '06
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

We are all aware of the amazing ways in which Sweet Briar graduates have used their degrees in the “real world” to achieve astonishing ends. It is no surprise then that many of them are eager to befriend and aid recent graduates and current students, because Sweet Briar continues to churn out the highest caliber of women. The Alumnae Association Student Relations Committee was founded in order to further unite current students with Sweet Briar alumnae.

This year the Student Relations Committee is aiding the Alumnae Association and the Sweet Briar College community in hosting the very first Homecoming weekend! The weekend will kick off on Thursday, September 22, 2005 with an evening lecture in Murchison Lane Auditorium given by Physicist and String Theorist Brian Green entitled “The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time and the Texture of Reality” followed by a book signing and reception. Other events taking place during Homecoming weekend will include the traditional Founders' Day celebration with an emphasis on sister class bonding, a concert by the Blue Ridge Chamber Orchestra, a Career Networking Breakfast for alumnae and current students, the Traditions Panel, a DJ party, and several athletic events.

The Student Relations Committee is working hard to make Homecoming a huge success. One way that current students can take part in the weekend is to participate in the Pink and Green Rivalry. The Seniors and Sophomores (2006 and 2008) will be the Pink Team and the Juniors and First Years (2007 and 2009) will be the Green Team. Students and alumnae are encouraged to wear their team's colors to sponsored event. The Student Relations Committee members will be supervising the events and keeping a running tally to see which team has attended the most events. Faculty and staff may support either team by wearing either pink or green. The winning team will receive a special prize!

The Alumnae Association and the Student Relations Committee are eagerly planning events for the remainder of the year and look forward to the anticipated high community involvement during Homecoming. Look for Student Relations Committee members in the next week who will be wearing pink t-shirts promoting Homecoming's Schedule of Events on the back.
