The Sweet Briar Seven
By Eleanor O’Connor ’07

Eleanor O'Connor1. Since it’s a slow news week, my first item is going to be an introduction to my column. The column’s name is The Sweet Briar Seven and its purpose is to point out seven things happening around campus or elsewhere outside our beautiful pink bubble. This issue’s subjects are all Sweet Briar happenings because the outside news is all hurricane related and I’m sure that we’ve all had about as much as we can take of that. So on with the Seven!

2. It’s been a while since its introduction, but I like our new webmail system. To be honest, I have it set up exactly like the old system but in a different color. The campus directory and the personal events calendar are both great additions though! I’m not quite sure why we have the phases of the moon or the sunrise/sunset schedules. Wouldn’t it be more useful to have something like the local weather forecast? I’ve heard some complaints about not being able to hide deleted mail and I agree. I miss being able to send all my deleted mail to a trash folder. All-in-all, thumbs up for the new webmail!

3. Keeping with improvements, I love Prothro’s new sandwich station. I’ve heard many people comment that “it’s like having your own personal Subway.” It was a great idea but it creates even crazier lines in an already crazy space. My friends know that I complain about Prothro’s layout all the time, and I think that the lines for food should be adjusted to move the opposite way that they’re moving now. That way the lines aren’t blocking other things like the salad bar, the dessert case, and the second soda machine. I promise this will be the only time I ever complain about that. Moving on.

4. On another food-related note, I’m not sure that there’s been a campus-wide announcement about an increase in our Bistro Extended Option allowances. It was a bummer to come back to school and see that while the Bistro’s prices had increased, our Extend Option amount hadn’t. But Miss Katie Vaughan, ever on the ball, made the world right again by speaking with Finance and Administration and getting our $6.00 increased to $6.25. Holla, holla!

5. Homecoming Weekend is this weekend and I’m curious to see whether the shift away from the “Alumnae Council” will be a success. I know that I’m looking forward to several of the events like the magician Nate Staniforth and the Blue Ridge Chamber Orchestra Concert. Last year’s Alumnae Dell Party was a real dud so I’m glad to see that they’ve revamped the weekend and hopefully this year’s party will have a little more life to it.

6. I was so happy to be back at school until about the second day of classes when I had the realization that this year is going to be insanely busy. A few days ago a friend told me that she was already praying for a snow day! I know that everyone has a hectic semester ahead of them so I have an idea. Maybe if everyone takes 15 seconds out of their busy days to pray for a snow day, we could collectively conjure up a snow storm. In September!

Hey, stranger things have happened.

7. Alright, we’ve reached number seven. This section is a ‘snaps to’ section where I’ll say something good about a person a group on campus that’s done something great. This issue’s snaps go to the Babcock Season Events Committee for bringing the Ahn Trio to Sweet Briar. The concert was absolutely incredible and it was great to see the auditorium packed. Who knew that ‘Riders of the Storm’ could sound so cool on a piano, violin and cello? It was the kind of concert that made me wish that I had practiced my violin more when I was little. So, snaps to the Babcock Season Events Committee!
