Sophmore cuts her hair for Locks of Love
By Katie Beth Ryan '08
STAFF WRITER

Katie Tipton ’08 returned to Sweet Briar for the fall semester with a bit of a surprise for her classmates: Twelve inches of her trademark blonde hair had disappeared over the summer. The new haircut was no mere makeover, however: The Brownsville, Texas native chose to donate the foot-long piece of her hair to Locks of Love, an organization which crafts wigs for children suffering from hair loss due to cancer.

Tipton had been aware of the organization for some time before choosing to cut her hair this summer. “I wanted to cut a lot of it off, but I didn’t decide to cut it until this summer,” she remarks. In addition, the death of her aunt from breast cancer motivated Tipton to donate her hair. Her idea was met with great enthusiasm by a hairstylist at her hometown spa, who agreed to cut Katie’s hair for free and arranged for her donation to be sent to the Florida-based organization.

Tipton admits that “it was really weird” seeing her new hairstyle for the first time, having not dramatically cut her hair since middle school. “But I figured this hair would grow back.” She adds that most of her friends at SBC “have really liked [my new haircut] better than my hair before.”

Tipton’s roommate, Margaret Barnes ’06, was among those who were pleasantly surprised by Katie’s new look. “I loved it,” she says, recalling her initial reaction to seeing Katie’s newly short hair. “I thought it looked really cute, and that it was a good decision.”

She also wasn’t surprised by her friend’s gesture. “Katie is a very giving person, always willing to help you out. It was definetly something Katie would do.”
