Boathouse parties continue as is
By Katie Vaughan ’06

Over the past couple of weeks, there has been a great deal of discussion around campus about the alcohol policy at the boathouse. At the Sept.12 Student Government Association meeting, Paul Davies, Vice-President of Finance and administration, and James McGhee, Director of Student Activities and Programming, both came to dispel any rumors that had erupted and to inform students what decisions had been made. The discussions arose after several incidents occurred at the boathouse this summer.

These incidents were unbecoming of the college, and while they involved non-Sweet Briar students, they caused the college to take a close look at how all policies are run for functions held at the boathouse. There have been changes in the contract which non-Sweet Briar students must sign. For instance, all events held by non- Sweet Briar students will have tighter security and must have alcoholic beverages catered.

When the idea was presented to have the same policy for students as was for non-students, current students and alums were extremely vocal about their opposition to this idea. Students were also able to host a boathouse party the Thursday prior to Monday’s meeting. The party went extremely well, with the hostesses doing a wonderful job of ensuring that all rules were followed. As a result of both a successful party, and students voicing their opinion, the decision was made to keep the alcohol policy at the boathouse status quo for students.

Students may continue to hold boathouse parties in the same manner as they were held last year. An added benefit that is available for students is the option of having the boathouse parties catered. Paul Davies has offered for us to use catering, with no additional cost other than that of the alcohol, thus significantly reducing the liability of the hostess since catering will be checking IDs and serving.
