New Clubs
By Jo Tudisco-Guntert`12,
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The club fair has come and gone this year, twice, so let’s give some applause to our returning clubs. Good. Now, it is a pleasure to introduce some of our new clubs on campus. The new clubs definitely give students the opportunity to get involved with other people who share their interests and also offer more opportunities for community service.

First, we have the Cooking Club returning to campus. This club wasn’t here last year, but has been resurrected from a few years ago. With Texan Sara Buttine ’11 as its president, this club has a Lone Star twist on meals.

Second is a brand new club formed just earlier this year, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Roshel MacGorman ’12 is the president of the SBC chapter of this national organization. This club revolves around the topic of engineering and all matters related, including education, promotion, and exploration. So, if you like engineering or are thinking about majoring in it, you may want to join SWE. Their main goal right now is to raise funds and increase the number of members in order to attend the national convention on Long Island by next fall.

Tap club BAM is another new addition to SBC’s student organizations. Though it’s not exactly a new club, having already been around for several years, BAM was approved last spring by the Inter-Club Council and is now in its official first full semester.

Founded by Michelle Sanchez, a 2008 Sweet Briar graduate, and Julia McClung ’09, its current president, this tap club focuses on community service on campus. A few examples of their involvement include giving Valentines to the Physical Plant staff, fundraisers for the United Way, and anything to do with helping kids. BAM is proud that they use an innovative tapping method; survey questions help current members of BAM get to know those who are interested in being tapped, and the answers are then voted on with no names attached.

New clubs are forming along with the influx of students, creating bonds and linking interests. The new clubs help Sweet Briar students get involved with what they are truly interested in, whether a current club addresses the subject or whether it is just getting started.
