Update On Gym Construction

One of the biggest changes in athletics and the SBC community for the upcoming year is the new fitness center. The new gym and fitness center is expected to open in August 2009, barring any construction delays.

Many people were concerned that there would be a delay after the “seven inch incident,” in which there was a measuring mix-up on some of the construction materials. However, this is not the case at all.

According to an e-mail sent out on October 20 by Vice President for Finance and Administration Paul Davies, “Unfortunately, the steel fabricating company thought the steel was to be recessed seven inches into the ground. Because of it the initial steel was cut too long. Our contractor caught the mistake after they began the initial instillation.” Thanks to the careful eyes of the construction employees, the opening of the gym is still on track for August.

Many in the SBC community are truly excited about this project. Among the many amenities this facility will provide are a court in which to play racquetball, a bistro/bar at which to eat dinner while watching hockey practice on the three multipurpose courts, a suspended running track, and a movie theater with the capacity to seat 80 or more people.

Not only will students be able to do all of the aforementioned activities, but the athletic department also plans to start up intramural and wreck league sports teams. According to Athletic Director Kelly Morrison, “Given the space we have now, intramural or wreck leagues are not possible. This new gym will allow us to start intramural or wreck leagues, which will bring our community together. It will help our PE classes and the community. The building is built for everyone, hence why it is called the ‘fitness and athletic center’. Fitness is for everyone.”

Current and prospective athletes are very excited to utilize this state-of-the-art facility. The new space will have a considerable impact on the athletic teams, because if there is inclement weather, they will all be able to practice inside. This may be a selling point for prospective students, and as a result should help attract more talented individuals to the program.

Morrison feels that this new building, “shows the commitment that SBC has for the athletic programs. Building a facility that is state-of-the-art today is necessary, given that our current gym was state-of-the-art in 1931. This will help us to pull in more recruits and will be beneficial to all of our athletic programs.”
